In Conversation With

Maureen Winter McDermott, Founder of Winter McDermott Design

Amherst Mesh Crewneck

Some people capture the East End spirit the moment they walk into a room—calm, refined, and quietly full of life. Interior designer Maureen Winter McDermott is one of them. She leads Winter McDermott Design—and she’s a longtime friend of Leallo and of our founder, Megan, which makes this conversation feel especially close to home.

Below, Maureen talks hosting rituals, how her style aligns with Leallo, and the gift she reaches for every holiday.

For those meeting you for the first time—tell us about Winter McDermott Design and your philosophy.

I founded Winter McDermott Design in 2015 after years with design and architecture firms in New York and the Hamptons, including a formative chapter working with Vicente Wolf. I’m always after a cohesive story: calm, relaxed rooms with thoughtful details and beautiful materials.

We are based in Sag Harbor where I live with my husband Michael and our two wonderful children PJ and Winter.

What’s your go-to table setting or signature touch when entertaining at home?

I love using handmade pottery for dinnerware paired with crystal glasses and sterling silver utensils, softened by a linen tablecloth and linen napkins. And always candlelight—it just brings everything to life.

What makes a gathering feel warm and memorable for you?

I love a dimly lit space with everyone’s shoes off, gathered around a candlelit table with good food and laughter filling the room. If there’s a fire crackling in the background, even better. I just love feeling warm with people I love. In the summer, there’s nothing better than eating outside in nature.

Your studio’s work marries calm, lived-in ease with refined detail. How does that same balance shape what you reach for in your wardrobe?

I think the Leallo brand feels very aligned with our WMD brand. We both embrace that mix of relaxing and refined. Leallo’s clothes are so versatile—you can wear them to lounge at home, to a meeting, or to dinner. The neutral palette is effortless to mix and match, and there’s an elegant comfort to every piece.

On a typical day—studio, errands, dinner—where do your go-to Leallo pieces take you?

I find myself wearing Leallo most out and about. I usually throw on a Leallo knit and a pair of jeans and go run errands. When I get home I throw on a pair of Leallo sweats and then I can truly relax.

What’s your philosophy when it comes to holiday gifting?

I love to find something special for each person. It’s less about the gift itself and more about the feeling of being known and thought of.

And finally, if you were to gift one Leallo piece this season, what would it be—and why?

I would gift one of the Leallo cashmere pieces. They’re timeless, incredibly soft, and make anyone feel instantly relaxed but still polished. It’s the kind of gift that feels indulgent yet practical and something you’d reach for again and again, whether you’re traveling, spending a cozy night in, or heading out to brunch. It’s truly a gift that makes someone feel cared for and comfortable.
